Jason Duval

0:09 Jason Duval is one of the two playable protagonists of Grand Theft Auto 6, with Lucia Caminos. Trailer 2 introduces him up on a roof, "just fixing some leaks", when his landlord Brian drops by with an errand: Brian has "properties with paying tenants", and Jason should "go get me my checks". Rockstar's description is of a man who wants an easy life: "Jason grew up around grifters and crooks. After a stint in the Army trying to shake off his troubled teens, he found himself in the Keys doing what he knows best, working for local drug runners. It might be time to try something new."

Quick facts

Who he is

0:40 IGN's reading of Trailer 2 and Rockstar's site: Jason is "a dude just looking for an easy life in a world that keeps making things harder". He tried to escape a troubled youth by joining the Army, but "his dark past keeps catching up with him". In a couple of scenes he wears a Leonida Marine Center shirt, and Rockstar's site adds that he works for local drug runners.

The Keys are also where he met the people around him: his landlord Brian Heder, a longtime drug runner, and his paranoid friend Cal Hampton.

26:54 His first safehouse is that house in the Keys. In An Extended Look he shoots hoops in its driveway, which TGG, who watched the footage at Rockstar North, describes as "a fun little mini game" rather than a full basketball game.

Jason and Lucia

0:57 In Trailer 2 Jason is the one waiting at Leonida Penitentiary when Lucia gets out. Asked "I seen you here before?", he answers: "You might have." What follows, their life together, how the player can shape it and where it leads, is on Jason and Lucia's Relationship.

10:11 The Extended Look gives him a domestic scene: Lucia asks which dress to wear, Jason picks one, she goes for a third, and in play the button to tell her to hurry up is right there. He sits down on the couch instead.

"You got to know when to get off"

18:50 Over a smoke overlooking Vice City, Brian gives Jason the advice that runs through the Extended Look: a crook has to quit before greed catches up with him. "You got to know when to get off, Jason. You hear me?" TGG reads it as foreshadowing.

In the launch trailer

0:01 Rockstar's launch trailer of Oct 15, 2026 opens on Jason at a marina in the Keys, polishing a boat while he talks on the phone, and for the first time he says in his own words how the Army ended: "I got in some trouble in the Army. Didn't leave on the best of terms. They don't give loans or, anything, to people like me." Then a prison call comes in from Lucia Caminos, who asks "Are we gonna be okay?", and later in the trailer comes the reply: "We've stuck together through everything. Just gotta get through it." What the trouble was, the trailer does not say. The rest of the trailer is on Trailers.

How players took him

6:58 After the Extended Look, Jason was the character players argued about. penguinz0 found him "really bland", comparing him to Claude Speed of the first games: "he didn't even exhibit an inkling of personality". Chat defended him as an ex-soldier, but penguinz0 pointed to Niko Bellic, a veteran with plenty of humor, and said he expects Jason to show more in the full game.

8:43 DarkViperAU had the opposite first impression: from still images he expected a hard man with a deeper voice, but in motion Jason "sounds and acts playful", and the voice, he decided, suits the personality. PC Gamer's Christopher Livingston went the other way, calling Jason "dull" and his voice "distractingly deep". See Fan Reaction.
