Jason and Lucia's Relationship

Grand Theft Auto 6 is built around a couple, and how close Jason and Lucia become is up to the player: time together, dates, texts and holding hands build it, ignoring each other wears it down, it can stay unromantic, and it never ends their partnership in crime.

In Grand Theft Auto 6, how close Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos become is up to the player: time together, dates, texts and holding hands bring them closer, ignoring each other wears it down, romance is optional, and they cannot break up. Their relationship is the heart of the game, the first Grand Theft Auto led by a couple. Near the end of Trailer 1 comes a two-word exchange between them: "Trust?" "Trust." Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's senior vice president of narrative, told Dazed the game is "a Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative", where earlier games had pushed romance to the side.

Up to you

Although the first trailer showed them in bed together, IGN reports that whether the relationship is romantic is your choice. Rockstar told IGN the two are their own characters with their own schedules, who can act independently outside story missions. You invest in them by spending time together: robberies, side activities, holding hands as you walk, or just texting. Ignore your partner's messages and it affects how they feel about each other.

Edge's cover story of Oct 29, 2026 adds that their closeness is measured on a four-point scale, which usually rises the more time they spend together: walks on the beach, cycling, the gym once they have bought a membership, or just driving around, one at the wheel and the other on their phone. Whether they can marry, Rob Nelson would neither confirm nor deny. "We start them wanting to be together, and wanting to give this relationship of theirs another shot," he told Edge. "But, as the game progresses, it's yours to keep or yours to lose."

There is no bar for it on screen either, TGG says. Jason and Lucia can text each other and say good night, you can take them on dates, and even a trip to the gym can count as one. Walking together, they can hold hands.

The Extended Look shows the hand-holding prompt. As TGG puts it, if you do not want a romance between them, you do not have to play into it, and they will not pursue one that far.

No break-ups

IGN asked whether you could force a break-up by treating Jason "like human wallpaper". No: there is no dumping your partner, so indifference or bad behavior shows up in the story rather than in a gameplay system. Being the perfect couple brings no gameplay benefit either, which makes it truly optional, and Nelson said the two remain partners in crime whatever you do: "it's really about what you want for them, their story, and how it plays out."

Dates

The Extended Look's montage has the couple in the Keys with dolphins offshore, Jason diving in with a backflip, a jet ski ride and kayaking in Vice City. These, TGG says, are the kind of activities that raise their relationship, and can work as dates.

Together on the road

When both are in a car in free roam, you can switch between the driver and the passenger. Nelson told TGG that the partner the game drives is "often better at driving than you are", so you are often better off in the passenger seat, slowing time with Focus and shooting out tires, and the result can feel like a scripted mission: "all of a sudden a train goes by and blocks them and you lose the cops." Dazed describes the same freedom off the job: swap to Lucia in the passenger seat to scroll her phone on the way to a job, then, when it goes wrong, take the wheel one moment and fire out of the passenger window the next. See Combat and Focus.

How the police treat a couple is on Wanted System: they can know you are together, and splitting up helps you escape.

Frequently asked questions

Can Jason and Lucia break up in GTA 6? No. IGN reports there is no way to dump your partner in Grand Theft Auto 6, and Rob Nelson said the two stay partners in crime whatever you do; neglect shows up in the story instead of ending the relationship.

Is the romance between Jason and Lucia optional? Yes. Whether their relationship in Grand Theft Auto 6 is romantic is the player's choice, IGN reports, and TGG says that if you do not play into it, they will not pursue a romance that far.

How do you improve Jason and Lucia's relationship? Spend time with them together in Grand Theft Auto 6: dates and activities such as the gym, walks on the beach, cycling, jet skis and kayaking, robberies, texting and holding hands as they walk. Ignoring your partner's messages wears it down.

Is there a relationship meter in GTA 6? Not on screen: TGG says there is no bar for it. The relationship shows as a heart in the switch menu and a tab in the menu, and Edge reports that the game measures their closeness on a four-point scale.

Can Jason and Lucia get married in GTA 6? Rockstar has not said. Asked by Edge on Oct 29, 2026, Rob Nelson would neither confirm nor deny it.

Is there a reward for being a perfect couple? No. IGN reports that a close relationship brings no gameplay benefit in Grand Theft Auto 6, which is what makes it truly optional.
