Cancel a Pre-order

A digital pre-order of Grand Theft Auto 6 can be canceled for a refund on the PlayStation Store any time before the Nov 19, 2026 release if it was paid more than 14 days ahead, but only until the game starts downloading, and pre-loading from Nov 12 counts as downloading. On Xbox any pre-order can be canceled in the Microsoft account's order history; once the card has been charged, up to 10 days before release, the cancellation is processed as a refund.

A digital pre-order of Grand Theft Auto 6 can be canceled for a full refund before the game comes out on Nov 19, 2026, as long as it has not started downloading: on the PlayStation Store, for a pre-order paid more than 14 days before release, "you may cancel a pre-order at any time before the release date and receive a refund", in the words of the PlayStation Store cancellation policy, but not once you have "started downloading or streaming the main part", pre-loading included. Pre-loading opens on Nov 12, 2026, and a console with automatic downloads turned on may start it by itself, so on PlayStation the safe last day to cancel is Nov 11. On Xbox, "You can cancel any pre-order online" through the Microsoft account's order history, and a pre-order canceled after it has been charged but before release is processed as a refund, according to Microsoft's pre-order page. A boxed copy, which is a download code, goes back to the shop that sold it under that shop's rules. These are the stores' general policies, read on Nov 1, 2026; neither store nor Rockstar has published rules for this game alone.

How do I cancel a GTA 6 pre-order on PS5?

Ask PlayStation Support for a refund before the game starts downloading. Sony's support page on canceling a pre-order sends players to PlayStation Support's store refunds request rather than a cancel button. The rules are the cancellation policy's:

  • Paid more than 14 days before release: cancel at any time before the release date, for a refund.
  • Paid 14 days or less before release: cancel up to 14 days after payment was taken.
  • Either way, only while the main game has not started downloading or streaming. After that, there is no refund "unless the item is faulty".

The refund goes back to the original payment method where possible; for some payment types, such as vouchers and mobile billing, it goes to the PlayStation wallet, the support page says.

Does pre-loading stop a refund?

On PlayStation, yes. The policy names "pre-loading before release" as part of the pre-order, so once the 7-Day Pre-load that the PlayStation Store lists starts on Nov 12, 2026, the right to cancel ends. Sony warns that downloads can start on their own when Automatic Downloads is on in the console's settings; turning it off keeps the choice open until the player starts the download. Anyone unsure about keeping the game should decide by Nov 11. When the pre-load opens and how big it is reported to be is on Release Time.

Microsoft's pre-order page says nothing about pre-loading and refunds, and its general rule is that any pre-order can be canceled online before release.

How do I cancel a GTA 6 pre-order on Xbox?

In the Microsoft account's order history, per Microsoft's cancellation steps:

  1. Go to account.microsoft.com/billing/orders and find the Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-order.
  2. Select Cancel item, tick the item, and select Cancel item again.
  3. Look for the confirmation email.

If Cancel item is missing, the order has already been charged; Microsoft then points Xbox buyers to its Xbox refund request form. When the charge comes depends on how it was paid: "If you use money in your Microsoft account, we'll charge you right away," and with a card or another method "we may charge you up to 10 days before the release date", which for Grand Theft Auto 6 means from about Nov 9, 2026.

What happens to the pre-order bonuses if I cancel?

They go with the order. Sony's support page says extra content that came with a pre-order can no longer be used once the pre-order is canceled. The Vintage Vice City Pack is not only a pre-order bonus: every copy bought before Nov 20, 2026 gets it, launch day included, so a player who cancels and buys again on Nov 19 still gets it. The free month of GTA+ that digital pre-orders carry is a membership of its own, which renews as a paid one unless it is canceled separately. What each edition and bonus holds is on Editions and Pre-orders.

Can I switch from the Standard to the Ultimate Edition?

Yes, without canceling. The Microsoft Store sells an Ultimate Edition Upgrade for $20.00 as an add-on to the Standard Edition; the PlayStation Store lists the same upgrade but marked it "Pre-Order Unavailable" when read on Oct 24, 2026, so on PlayStation it can be bought after launch, or the Standard pre-order canceled and the Ultimate Edition ordered instead while the rules above allow. The checklist for the week is on the Launch Guide.
